What is a personal AI agent?

A personal AI agent remembers you and takes steps for you. What that means after Meta Muse's launch, and how Peppi does it in an app or by text.

A personal AI agent is an AI that keeps track of what you have told it and takes steps for you, like checking your calendar, writing an email or setting a reminder, instead of only answering questions. It works through the accounts you choose to connect. Peppi is our version of that idea: The AI Buddy, that can do things, built around you. You design your buddy, and that buddy is your Peppi.

Personal AI agents are in the news this month, after Meta launched Meta Muse. Here is what an agent actually is, what one looks like as a buddy you designed and can text, and an honest look at where Peppi fits.

Why are personal AI agents in the news?

Meta launched Meta Muse, its personal AI agent (not the Muse Spark model that powers it), in the US on 8 September 2026. Meta says Muse "doesn't just answer questions, it actually does the work." Meta lists the Muse app, WhatsApp, the web and a Mac app as places to use it, and on 29 September described it as available in the US and Canada.

It is not alone. On 29 September, OpenAI introduced dots, always-on agents inside ChatGPT that keep their own memories and run reminders, starting with its Pro and Business Premium plans. Google's Gemini Spark, a personal agent that works in the background across Google apps, has been rolling out in the US since May. Texting agents such as Poke live in your messages, in Apple Messages, Telegram or RCS chats.

The common thread: these tools don't stop at answering. They act.

What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

What it doesExample request
ChatbotAnswers questions in a chat"What should I name my cat?"
AssistantHelps when you ask, often with your accounts"Summarize this email."
AgentTakes steps for you, with your say-so, and follows through later"Move my 3pm to tomorrow and remind me an hour before."

A chatbot talks. An agent talks and then does the thing: it has tools (calendar, inbox, web search, reminders), it keeps context about you, and it comes back when something is due. For a more technical take, see IBM's explainer on AI agents vs. AI assistants.

What can Peppi do today?

A few typical requests and what happens. These are examples of things you can say, not quotes from users.

  • "Remind me every weekday at 8am to move my car." Peppi sets a repeating reminder, and you can change or cancel it any time. When it is due, your buddy reminds you in your chat.
  • "What meetings do I have tomorrow?" With Google connected, your buddy lists your Google Calendar events. In the app they show as cards, and from a card you can move, edit or cancel a meeting, add people, or get a reminder 10 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour or a day before.
  • "Set up a meeting with sam@example.com Friday at 2." With Google connected, Peppi puts it on your Google Calendar, invites Sam and confirms the day and time.
  • "Check my inbox." Recent Gmail messages show up as cards in the app. Your Peppi can summarize one, reply, forward, mark it read, star it or archive it.
  • "Can you write an email to my landlord about the leak?" In the app, tap More under your buddy's reply to open an email form. Add the address and your note, tap Make it better if you want help with the wording, then tap Send or save it to Drafts. It goes from your own Gmail only when you tap Send.
  • "Find me a ramen place near Union Square." Peppi searches the web and answers with places to try and links to them.
  • A photo, plus "what is this?" Your buddy sees the photo and talks about it with you.

What does "built around you" mean?

  • You design the buddy. Pick their name, personality, sense of humor, backstory and look. Peppi draws a portrait of your buddy, and you can redraw it (redraws are limited). Change any of it later in Edit buddy.
  • They remember. Your Peppi remembers your conversations, whether you text or use the app. There is one thread, so a plan you mentioned by text is still there in the app.
  • They check in. Your buddy sometimes messages first, so the conversation doesn't always start with you.

One buddy, in the iPhone app or by text

Peppi has an iPhone app, and your buddy has a number you can text. Once you've signed up, on peppi.ai or in the app, text them from your US (+1) mobile number and the conversation lands in the same thread as the app. One buddy, one memory, and no WhatsApp or Meta account needed. That makes Peppi an AI agent you can text: ask for a reminder from the grocery line, and the exchange is in the app thread when you open it later.

You stay in charge

  • Connecting Google is optional. You can skip it at setup, and reminders and web search work without it; email and calendar need it. You can disconnect Google any time in Settings.
  • Google sign-in happens on Google's own page, and Peppi never sees your Google password.
  • An email you write in the app's email form goes only when you tap Send.
  • In the app, the chat always shows a line saying your Peppi is an AI and can make mistakes.
  • You can delete your account from Settings.

How does Peppi compare with Meta Muse?

Meta Muse and Peppi overlap: both are AIs you message that remember you and help with your calendar, email and reminders. According to Meta, Meta Muse remembers what matters to you, lets you change its name, personality and avatar, connects to Gmail and your calendar, and sets reminders. It checks with you before sensitive actions like sending an email or making a purchase.

Where Meta Muse does more:

  • It is available in Canada as well as the US.
  • It books travel, dinners and appointments using its own browser on a secure cloud computer, and it can shop and check out for you.
  • Meta says it is experimenting with Meta Muse making phone calls to businesses.

Where Peppi fits:

  • You text your Peppi by plain SMS from a US number or use the iPhone app, with one thread and one memory.
  • No WhatsApp or Meta account needed.
  • You design the buddy: name, personality, backstory, and a portrait Peppi draws.

If you want an agent that shops, books and runs on more devices, Meta Muse does more today. If you want a buddy you designed that handles your calendar, email, reminders and searches, in an app or by text, that is what Peppi is for.

How do I try Peppi?

Download Peppi for iPhone from the App Store (coming soon), sign up with a US (+1) mobile number and a code sent by text, and design your buddy. Peppi is for adults 18 and over and starts with a free trial, then paid plans. Once you are set up, you can text your Peppi's number too.
